2018 Christmas Party

It's one week until our Christmas party.  We'll have a short meeting, Show and Tell, then the fun will begin.  2019 dues can be paid at this meeting and we have a new membership form for you to fill out.  (no BOM, this will be a month for catching up!)

Where:  Primitive Gatherings
When:  Thursday, December 20th at 6:30 PM
What:  Fun!  Bring a snack to share, 3 FQs for the Fat Quarter Game and your Soup Bowl Cozy for the gift swap.

We're doing the Gift Swap a new way this year.  Instead of "brown-bagging"; place your soup bowl cozy in an attractive gift bag or wrap it with wrapping paper.

At the November meeting, I was asked if 2 cozies were OK.  My answer was, do whatever you want, but at least one!  For the actual exchange, we're doing a Yankee Swap.  I've done this several times, and it's always a lot of fun!

What is a Yankee Swap?  Below are the rules.

Yankee Swap
1.    Place all the gifts in one area where everyone can see them.

2.    Put numbers in a hat for the number of people that are participating.

3.    Everyone takes turns drawing a number until everybody has one.  This determines the order of gift selection.

4.    #1 picks a wrapped gift from the pile and opens it.

5.    #2 has the option to A) take the opened gift from #1 or B) Pick a gift from the pile.

6.    If #2 takes the gift from #1, then #1 picks again.

7.    #3 has the option to A) take either of the previously opened gifts or B) Pick a new gift from the pile.

8.    Whoever gets a gift taken from them must pick a new one, but does not have the option to swap.

9.    This carries on down the line.  Everyone has the option to take any gift that has already been opened, or take a chance on a new gift.

10.   Here’s the kicker… Once all the gifts are opened, #1 has the option to swap with anyone else.  Essentially getting to choose any gift she wants.

November 2018 Meeting

The Holidays are upon us! With Thanksgiving last week, this month's blog post is a little late. But we hope you all had a wonderful week. :)

After Jan's announcements (which will be touched upon at the end of this post), she collected the November BOMs.

The December BOM is the Christmas Star by Threadbare Creations. Thanks again to Rose Johnston of Threadbare Creations who allowed us to use her block for this month's Block of the Month. :) For directions on how to create this block, click here

After I presented the BOM I did a little demo on paper piecing to help those who've never done it see how to create this star block. I was able to get through half of a smaller sized block, which I will be making into a mug rug for home. :)

After my demo, Jan started our Show and Tell by bringing out her quilt she made with fabric she bought in Norway. It's bound and beautiful! :)

She also brought in her quilt from last month which was quilted by Nancy and is also now bound.

Jessica bought and made these adorable advent calendar stockings from Piecemakers in Costa Mesa.

She also making a scrap quilt from the scraps leftover when making the BOMs. Every time she makes a block for the guild, she also makes one for herself. What a great idea!

Nancy recently went to a quilt retreat in North Dakota. She took with her this quilt kit she had bought from QuiltCon and was able to piece together the entire quilt top. It will be a Christmas gift for her husband.

And here's the back view to see all that piecing. What a view!

Taylor showed us her charity quilt she free motion quilted on her domestic machine. Great job, Taylor!

Sue took her son's military shirts and made him this one of a kind stocking.

She also made her sister this cute quilt for Christmas.

Linda's daughter saw her Dream Big panel from Hoffman Fabrics and wanted a quilt out of it so Linda is surprising her for her birthday.

Yajaira met a lady who had lot of panels and gave her this cute advent calendar panel.

She also brought in this quilt she started a while ago. Shed took half of a quilt top and added borders.

And this baby quilt top will be gifted to one of her husband's buddie's wife who is pregnant.

We ended the meeting with our monthly raffle. Here were the raffle winners:

Jessica won The Men Behind the Quilts Calendar, Madelynn won the Primitive Gatherings Gift card, and Nancy won the Timeless Treasures Charm pack.

Our next meeting will be our Christmas party at Primitive Gatherings! Join on us Thursday, December 20th at 6:30.  We will be having a Soup Bowl Cozy exchange. For a tutorial on how to create these, click here.  This year we won't be putting them in a brown bag, but instead in a cute box or gift bag. Bring snacks or dessert to share and 3 FQs for the fat quarter game (any color or print). We will be presenting the January BOM, have show and tell and will play a game or ice breaker. Also, don't forget to bring your dues at this time, by our January meeting at the latest. Happy sewing and we hope to see you all there! :)

2018 Christmas Party Gift Exchange

Each year we exchange a handmade gift at our December meeting/Christmas Party.  In the past, it's been a zippered pouch and a mug-rug & a mug.  This year the board came up with the idea of exchanging microwave soup bowl cozies.  The rumor is that these are also perfect for holding a bowl of ice cream because your fingers don't end up freezing.  So, bowl cozies it is!

Here is a list of tutorials for making a bowl cozy for our Christmas Party Gift Exchange:

There are literally hundreds of tutorials and video tutorials, find one that you like.

October 2018 Meeting

This month's meeting was a little on the small size, but fun nevertheless. :)

Jan started off with some announcements:

Our dues will be going up from $35 to $40 in 2019. If you're joining after June it'll be $25 for the last half of the year. Next year's dues are to be paid by the January 2019 meeting.

For those who wanted to nominate anyone for the board, we collected nominations at the meeting. Next year's nominees will be announced at next month's meeting and voted on at December's meeting.

The QuiltCon charity quilt meeting will be postponed and details will be in an email from Jessica very soon.

Madelynn did the BOM for October. It's the August BOM for the Boulder MQG. The original blog post can be found here

Linda gave an Applique demo. She touched on Hawaiian Applique and 2 Fabric Applique. She showed us wall hangings she's made using patterns by Nancy Lee Chong from the Pacific Rim Quilt Company. (

Jan started off Show and Tell by showing us the Jelly Roll Race quilt she'd finished. It'll be donated to the guild's charity.

Nancy quilted Jan's QuiltCon 2-color quilt challenge entry for 2019. Jan used the same 2 blocks in the entire quilt! :)

Madelynn brought in her completed quilted Charity quilt to turn in. It was her first time on the long arm and she did great!

Debbie (who was our guest) made the Beauteous quilt kit which she purchased from Needle in a Fabric Stash a few months ago.

Linda's friend started a log cabin quilt, made herself a small one, then sent her the rest of the strips for Linda to make this huge quilt!

We ended our meeting with the monthly raffle. Here were the winners:

Linda won a Fat quarter Bundle of Me+You, Susan won the Primitive Gatherings Gift Card, and Nancy won The Men Behind the Quilts Calendar.

Don't forget our next board meeting is November 8th and our next meeting is November 15th. Hope to see you all there!

September 2018 Meeting

This month's meeting was full of inspiration!

Susan presented the September Block of the Month. She made a few blocks to showcase all of the fun ways you can create them. The Butterfly Block tutorial can be found here.

After Susan shared the Block of the Month with us we had a little yard sale. People brought some fun goodies to sell!

Jan kicked off off Show and Tell by presenting this awesome rocket ship mini quilt she made for a QuiltCon challenge put on by Norcott Fabrics. She received some purple fabric from them and used it to create the rocket ship, and the quilt came in 2nd place! She aso entered it in a Los Angeles quilt show just for fun.

Jan also brought in her butterfly quilt she completed for the charm pack challenge.

Madelyn made a cute halloween table runner out of a charm pack for the charm pack challenge.

Angelica finished her jelly roll race quilt top and got it quilted by her friend Katie Kasel.

Sue made this fun jelly roll quilt for sister for christmas. What a fun design!

Sherry showed us her luggage tags and kitchen towels she made using scraps. Her plan was to sell them at her booth in Calla Mesa that weekend.

Wendy made this wonderful Nightmare Before Christmas quilt.

She also made this fun Mickey Mouse Halloween quilt. She's listed both for sale in her etsy shop.

Wendy also completed the charm pack challenge by making this quilt using the Moda Bake Shop pattern "Square Pegs".

Susan turned in her charity quilt top that she quilted on her mid arm. She used a different design for each block.

Linda also turned in a charity quilt that was quilted by a guest we had a few months back by the name of Manon Keely.

Linda showed us her second quilt she made from the other Kaffe Fassett kit bought on Craftsy a few months ago. She also made this one larger like her first she shared with us.

After Show and Tell we ended our meeting with our monthly raffle. Here were this month's winners:

Wool Sampler Pack - Patricia
Charm Pack and Notebook - Linda
Primitive Gatherings Gift Card - Angelica

Just a reminder for next month's meeting: we will be talking about board nominations for the new year and will have voting in November. New board positions will take effect in January of 2019. Hope to see you all there!
